This was last on tv a few years ago, when the tv series was yet to fade out, and I watched maybe half an hour before becoming annoyed with it, so when I recorded it last night I sacrificed a big chunk of the end in order to record Risky Business, but now I wish I hadn't.

You might imagine that a precursor to one of the 1990s' biggest cult tv shows would be better watched as an entity in its own right, but actually a lot of the interest in watching it is in its position as the original form of Buffy. It's written, like the tv show, by Joss Whedon, and it's not hard to pick up on the same sense of humour at work. However, it's employed in a completely different way. The Buffy we see here is a high school prep, a cheerleader, a flake: a vacuously popular girl in a group of friends who are all the same. She has none of the dark past of the Buffy we're more accustomed to, so her encounters with the Watcher provide her with a totally alien environment. The Watcher, incidentally, is considerably more supernatural than our librarian friend Giles. And the choice of vampires is interesting too: there's this one 1200-year-old guy who pops up everywhere and is basically just a crazy nasty vampire. It's no surprise that sticking David Boreanaz in as a broody love interest / villain worked a lot better. Kristy Swanson is perfectly adequate for the role she takes on, and we're treated to less-than-noteworthy appearances from Hilary Swank and David Arquette.

In short, an interesting film for anyone who was ever a fan of Buffy or who is interested in what is needed to make a concept successful, but probably not so worthy taken at face value.

A bit of trivia? Seth Green was actually cast for that movie, but his scenes were cut from it (I'm not sure why though and I have no idea who his character was).
